Zygmunt Vogel (known as Ptaszek, Polish for "Bird" — ''Vogel'' is German and Dutch for "Bird"; 1764 – 1826) was a Polish artist who specialized in watercolor and drawing.〔"Vogel, Zygmunt," ''Encyklopedia Powszechna PWN'' (PWN Universal Encyclopedia), volume 4, Warsaw, Państwowe Wydawnictwo Naukowe, 1976, p. 565.〕 ==Life== Vogel was born in 1764 in Wołczyn (now Vowchyn, Belarus). In 1780 he was accepted into the royal painting studio at Warsaw Castle.〔 From 1787 he traveled the country, executing views of castles, ruins, cities, and residences that possess great documentary value. Part of them were published in aquafortes and aquatints by J.Z. Frey (''Zbiór widoków sławniejszych pamiątek narodowych... w Polsce''— A Collection of Views of More Famous National Monuments... in Poland, 1806).〔 In 1808–26 Vogel resided in the Krasiński Palace, on Krakowskie Przedmieście just across the street from Warsaw University. (The palace, which now houses the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, has also been home to composer Frédéric Chopin and poets Zygmunt Krasiński and Cyprian Norwid.)
